old universityThe thought of establishing a university in Calcutta was first come into the mind of the Council of Education in 1845 which suggested that in view of the ‘advanced state of education’ in Bengal, it was advisable to have a full-fledged university authorized to grant degrees to the deserving students. The Education Despatch of 19 July, 1854, popularly known as Wood’s Despatch, had really cleared the path for setting up of universities.
The University Act (Act No.II of 1857) was passed by the Legislative Council and received the Governor-General’s assent on 24 January, 1857. This was indeed the foundational legislation in the history of the University of Calcutta. Altogether forty persons were named as Foundation Fellows.
And as a result we get our University, the pilgrimage for all people who love education and culture worldwide.
Calcutta’s leading Victorian architect of that time, Walter B. Granville designed the Senate House. After it was completed, it became the most visible symbol of the University and an authentic landmark in the ‘City of Palaces’. It was constructed at a cost of Rs 4, 34,697 and was formally inaugurated on the convocation day: 12 March, 1873.
The first B.A. Examination was held early in 1858. The M.A. was held for the first time in 1861 there.
logoThe first two lady graduates of the University were Kadambini Ganguli and Chandramukhi Basu the students of Bethune College. And renowned educationist Gooroodass Banerjee became the first Indian Vice-Chancellor in 1890.
On 17 January, 2006, the year-long Post Centenary Golden Jubilee Celebration was inaugurated by the President of India.

librThe academic session of the University commences every year from the 1st day of July and ends on the 30th day of June of the following year. Admission to the undergraduate courses commences after the result of the Higher Secondary Examination of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) comes out. Admission for the postgraduate courses commences after B.A./B.Sc./B.Com. Honours Examinations’ results of the University are published.
The Calcutta University is not only for the students of this country but pupils from different part of this whole world come here to study and be the part of this historical journey.
This is our national heritage and we are really very proud to have such a grand institute in our city.
